SUMMARY:The Crimson Cowboys: The Remarkable Odyssey of the 1931 Claflin Emerson Expedition
DESCRIPTION:In 1931 a group from Harvard University’s Peabody Museum accomplished something that had never been attempted in the history of American archaeology: a six-week\, four-hundred-mile horseback survey of Fremont prehistoric sites through some of the West’s most rugged terrain. The expedition was successful\, but a report on the findings was never completed. What should have been one of the great archaeological stories in American history was relegated to boxes and files in the basement of the Peabody Museum at Harvard. This talk situates the 1931 survey and its discoveries within the history of American archaeology. \nAbout the Presenter: \nJames M. Aton is an award-winning author or coauthor of seven books on the Colorado Plateau’s rivers\, explorers\, and artists. Ohio University awarded him a PhD in American Literature in 1981. From 1980 to 2020\, he was a Professor of English at Southern Utah University. Aton was also a Visiting Fulbright Scholar in American Studies at Gadjah Mada University in Indonesia in 1989-90 and at Sichuan University of China in 1997-98. He currently serves as Board President of the Colorado Plateau Archaeological Alliance (CPAA). Since 2003 he has assisted CPAA on scores of archaeological surveys and excavations on or near the Colorado Plateau. \n

SUMMARY:Murders & Massacres in Southern Utah
DESCRIPTION:Murders & Massacres in Southern Utah \nIn 1869 John Wesley Powell was the first white man to boat the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. He started with nine other men\, but after one dropped out at the Uintah Indian Agency in Utah Territory\, three more men left towards the end of the three-month expedition\, climbing out of the canyon and heading for Washington\, Utah\, about 50 miles distant through the desert. The three were never seen again. Most historians believe they were murdered\, most likely in what is today Washington County. There is little consensus on who did the killing or why.  This presentation will discuss the prevailing theories in light of the facts we know. \nAbout the Presenter: \n \nDoug Bowen has a BA in German Literature\, is married To Debbie\, with four adult children\, and has lived in Southern Utah for the past 35 years. He’s taught for the Institute For Continued Learning at Utah Tech University for 20 years\, with courses on Mark Twain\, German\, and a number of historical topics\, including one titled ‘Intermountain Massacres and Murders” which includes this session on the Powell Expedition murders. \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER \nor \nScan the QR Code Below ⇓
